ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS MAY REPORT CRIMES WITHOUT FEAR OF ARREST
SEOUL, 27 March 2017 – The Philippine Embassy in Seoul wishes to inform the Filipino community that the Korean National Police Agency (KNPA) has given reassurances that the police will provide assistance to foreigners who are victims of crime regardless of immigration status in Korea.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) has been running a program focusing on the issues of undocumented immigrants in Seoul who may have been victims of crimes but are hesitant to file a report to the police due to their illegal status.
With this program, Korean citizens and officials are prohibited from reporting against illegal aliens. Since its implementation in 2016, over 460 undocumented immigrants have received police assistance.
To report an incident, any Filipino regardless of status who wishes to report a crime may simply call SMPA’s hotline number 112, website: https://www.smpa.go.kr or the KNPA at hotline number 182, website: http://www.police.go.kr/eng/main.do. Or visit the nearest police station to personally report an incident.
