PHILIPPINE EMBASSY PARTICIPATES IN SIGNING CEREMONY FOR NEW CORVETTES FOR THE PHILIPPINE NAVY
02 January 2022, Seoul – Closing a productive year in the effort towards realizing the Philippine Defense Modernization Program, the Embassy of the Philippines led by Ambassador Theresa Dizon-De Vega and Defense Attaché Col. Enriqueto Deocadez joined the virtual and on-site signing ceremony of the PHP28-billion contract with South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for the acquisition of two brand-new corvettes for the Philippine Navy on 28 December 2021. The two brand-new corvettes are capable of conducting anti-ship, anti-submarine, and anti-air warfare missions.
The Embassy joins the Department of National Defense in celebrating the timely signing of the PHP28 billion PN Corvette Lot 1 Acquisition Project contract before the end of 2021. These new acquisitions are a key capital asset for the Philippine Navy and a testament to robust PH-ROK defense cooperation despite the challenges of the ongoing pandemic. The signing of the Corvette Lot 1 Acquisition Project with HHI, the same company which built the Philippines’ two Jose Rizal-class guided-missile frigates, will ensure commonality and interoperability, especially in ease of maintenance and repairs. The two ships will also serve as backstops for the two frigates now in commission with the Philippine Navy.
With this signing, the Embassy of the Philippines is pleased to note that the Philippines continues its steady progress towards achieving the defense modernization goals it set in 2016, through the upgrade of military equipment and capacity building of its personnel. END

Sentro Rizal-Korea Commemorates the 125th Anniversary of Rizal Martyrdom
29 December 2021, Seoul – The Philippine Embassy in Korea commemorated the 125th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of national hero Dr. Jose P. Rizal with a program including the unveiling of a new bust of Dr. Rizal from the National Commission on Culture and the Arts (NCCA) at the recently refurbished Sentro Rizal in Seoul
The event also featured a floral offering at the bust of Dr. Rizal led by Philippine Ambassador Theresa De Vega and heads of attached services in Korea. Other program features included a recitation of excerpts from Rizal’s “Mi Ultimo Adios” by Knight Grand Officer of the Knights of Rizal and Philippine Ambassador to Belgium Eduardo Jose A. De Vega, and a screening of acclaimed Filipino writer-director Nicholas B. Pichay’s short film “Rizal’s Pen” produced by the NCCA.
In her remarks, Philippine Ambassador Theresa De Vega, a member of the Ladies for Rizal, noted that this year’s theme of “Rizal: Para sa Agham, Katotohanan at Buhay” (Rizal: For Science, Truth, and Life) is timely as we are living in a world where science is a key instrument for sustainable progress and a better world. “Rizal knew early on that scientific knowledge must be used for enlightenment and progress and not the oppression of society”, she added.
The Sentro Rizal in Seoul features a conference room and resource center with books and other publications on Dr. Rizal and the Philippines, a reading lounge, and an event hall for film screenings, meetings, assemblies, and other presentations. END
